Call for Submissions – Perron Courtyard remembers Fleuri Perron

Profiles - Art Gallery of St Albert, in partnership with Michael Herald, is pleased to announce a Call for Submissions for a Permanent Urban Art Feature to be located at the new Perron Courtyard building, on Perron Street in Perron District, Downtown St. Albert, AB.

This publicly accessible art feature will be integrated into the courtyard of the building which is due to be completed in November of 2010.  The building incorporates 6,000 sq.ft. of commercial space that will house a blend of commercial businesses, an eatery and an outdoor courtyard. The courtyard will feature a Perron District light feature.

This call is an opportunity to honor St. Albert’s rich cultural and artistic diversity by highlighting Fleuri Perron: a historical figure, previous Mayor of St. Albert and the namesake of the street and district.

The presence of public art is viewed as a means to engage and involve those who visit for the first time as well as those who experience the area daily. This feature will become part of the identity of Perron Street.

Artists are encouraged to submit original designs for a piece of public art or feature for the external courtyard area. Consideration will only be given to those who highlight Fleuri Perron and special consideration will be given to designs that also have a function for those that use the courtyard, such as but not limited to; a place to sit, a place to lock a bike, something interactive (for instance a chess board or similar). Your design should draw people from the street and encourage visitors to experience and enjoy the courtyard, whilst conveying the history of the district.

We will consider proposals from individuals, collaboratives or groups for design only and/or proposals for design and construction of the feature.

The construction materials you select must be durable in the environment of a busy public area in all seasons (notably St. Albert’s extreme weather conditions). The feature will be corrosion, salt and vandalism resistant and should be safe for members of the public. Proposals for water features and/ or fountains will not be considered.

This call is open to local, regional, national and international artists.

Submission requirements

1. Letter of interest including; name, telephone number, email address and mailing address of applicant

2. Artist Credentials

3. Curriculum Vitae

4. Where applicable artists should also include visual documentation of previous artwork that can include a maximum of 5 photographs, or jpeg image files on CD-Rom. All support material must be accompanied by a numbered corresponding list that includes date, dimensions, titles and medium. Do not visibly include artist(s) name(s) on the front of the images

5.  Written summary to describe the concept of the feature

6. Visual design/ artists impression/ rendering or comprehensive sketch of the feature. Do not visibly include artist(s) name(s) on any images

Walk into a World of Art!  Beyond the Frame debuted at the 2010 International Children's Festival in June.  It featured original mural-size paintings in a three-dimensional, interactive exhibit.  Beyond the Frame was inspired by St. Albert's Cultivate Life theme.  Visitors discovered a whimsical forest with a lizard horse, aerial castles and armadillo-ed turtles peeking through earthy imagery!  Children of all ages created images that extended beyond the artist's painting and engaged in many creative experiences, to learn and grow through the arts.
